Join Us: Mayor London Breed Unveils “The Spirit of Fillmore,” 8/3/19

San Francisco Mayor London Breed, who grew up in public housing adjacent to the Western Addition’s Buchanan Mall, will be the featured speaker at a ribbon-cutting ceremony on August 3, 2019 celebrating the completion of the mall’s new The Spirit of Fillmore mural.

The celebration will take place between 11am and 1pm at the Rosa Parks Senior Center at 1111 Buchanan Street

In addition to Mayor Breed, notable speakers will include District 5 Supervisor Vallie Brown; Trent Rhorer, Executive Director of the San Francisco Human Services Agency; and the family of Mary Rogers, a local housing activist and community hero whose portrait appears in The Spirit of Fillmore mural.

The free, public ribbon-cutting event will feature intergenerational games and activities and light refreshments. It will honor Mary Rogers and the many neighborhood residents who helped create the mural.

More than a thousand community members contributed to The Spirit of Fillmore. Hundreds of people spoke with Buchanan Stories documentarians and shared their personal histories, their memories of the neighborhood’s past, and their visions for a revitalized Buchanan Mall. These interviews served as a basis for subsequent public design workshops, in which hundreds more residents collaborated to translate their neighbors’ stories into a mural layout. Residents of all ages then painted the mural under the direction of professional muralists from the Bay Area Mural Program (BAMP).

The completed Spirit of Fillmore wraps around the outside of the Rosa Parks Senior Center, from ground to roof. It depicts a chronological history of the Western Addition, with portraits of community leaders and heroes as well as unsung and anonymous neighborhood residents who fought for justice and equity during different periods of history.

Join us to celebrate the completion of this beautiful testament to the strength of the Buchanan Mall community.
