A Brighter Buchanan: Fresh Hopes for Public Mall Space

A community board is designing a park that participants hope will help redefine the neighborhood’s identity in a rapidly growing city. Tentative plans include planters, a community gathering space and signs detailing the history of the Western Addition.

“We want to unify and stop being afraid of each other,” said Tyrone Mullins, co-founder of Green Streets, which manages recycling and composting in the neighborhood and has helped push the project forward. “We want to see people uplift each other. It’s no secret that there’s been a generational gap. I’m 30, and I don’t know about my own neighborhood. Where does that leave us? We need to change that.”
